Clinton Vivian (1861-1930)
Working in the Colonial Revival style, architect Clinton Vivian designed about a dozen stately homes in the Village of Cayuga Heights between 1905 and 1930.
Vivian arrived in Ithaca in 1882 and received his architectural training at the firm of leading architect William Henry Miller. After ten years, Vivian left Miller’s and partnered with Arthur N. Gibb in the firm of Vivian and Gibb. The duo designed many notable commercial and residential buildings in downtown Ithaca, including the Tompkins County Trust Company Building at 110 N. Tioga. Many of the original buildings in Renwick Park (now Stewart Park) were Vivian and Gibb designs: the Cascadilla School Boathouse and the main pavilion are two of their remaining constructions.
On his own after 1900, Vivian designed the elegant Williams home at 306 N. Cayuga Street, restored the Clinton House, and designed the old South Hill School, as well as undertaking custom residential contracts in the new Village of Cayuga Heights. All told, Vivian designed more than 200 projects in Tompkins County and was known for his early use fire-resistant construction.
