In the nineteenth century, the farm belonged to several generations of the Manning family. An 1853 map of Tompkins County shows "Wid. Manning" as owner of the property. This was Hannah Manning (Dec. 27, 1809-Jan. 20, 1887), whose husband Abram Manning died in 1848.

Hannah's son Richard Manning (Sep. 24 , 1826-Dec. 19, 1892) and daughter-in-law Catherine Kline Manning (Feb. 18, 1832-Jun. 7, 1884) inherited the land and are shown on an 1866 Tompkins County map.
Richard Manning served in the Civil War. He was a corporal in New York's 34th Regiment of Infantry, which fought battles in Virginia and Maryland, including the Battle of Antietam in September 1862. |
